A.C. Moore

Return to Index

A.C. Moore, a popular East Coast arts and crafts retailer, discontinued its operations in late 2019, closing all 145 stores due to intense competition from online retailers and other chains. The company's parent, Nicole Crafts, sold leases and assets to competitor Michaels, with some former A.C. Moore locations converting to Michaels stores in 2020, while the brand itself effectively ceased to exist as a standalone entity.

Key Details:

Announcement: November 2019.

Reason: Difficulty competing nationally in the retail environment, especially against online stores.

Parent Company: Nicole Crafts.

Competitor Acquisition: Michaels bought leases for up to 40 stores and a distribution center.

Outcome: All A.C. Moore stores closed, with some becoming Michaels stores, marking the end of the brand.
