Marshall Fields

Return to Index

Marshall Field's department stores were discontinued and rebranded as Macy's in 2006 after Federated Department Stores (which became Macy's, Inc.) acquired the chain, replacing the iconic name and green awnings with Macy's branding as part of a national strategy, much to the dismay of many loyal Chicago shoppers who missed its unique character, although some historical features like the Tiffany ceiling and Frango mints remained for a time.

Key Events:

2005 Acquisition: Federated Department Stores (owner of Macy's) purchased Marshall Field's from the May Department Stores Co..

2006 Name Change: In September 2006, all Marshall Field's stores were converted to Macy's, retiring the beloved regional name.

Reason for Change: The move was part of a broader consolidation strategy to create a single, strong national brand, as regional chains struggled against larger competitors.
