Pic 'N' Save

Return to Index

The original Pic 'N' Save discount store chain went defunct but was revived in different forms, with recent efforts to bring back Pic 'N' Save Bargains & Groceries (PNSBG) in Southern California facing setbacks in late 2025, while the Kroger-owned Pick 'n Save grocery chain in Wisconsin also saw significant store closures in mid-2025 as part of Kroger's national downsizing, leaving many customers concerned.

The Original Discount Store (Pic 'N' Save/MacFrugals)

Acquisition: The iconic closeout retailer Pic 'N' Save (which became MacFrugals) was acquired by Big Lots.

Decline: The original concept faded, with many locations eventually becoming Big Lots or closing, though the brand lingered as a memory.

Revival Attempts (Pic 'N' Save Bargains & Groceries)

New Ownership: Mark J. Miller, former CEO of Pic 'N' Save, led a team to revive the brand as Pic 'N' Save Bargains & Groceries (PNSBG) in 2020/2021.

Southern California: PNSBG aimed to open stores in former 99 Cents Only locations, offering groceries and general merchandise, but plans for some Southern California locations were canceled in late 2025.

The Grocery Chain (Kroger's Pick 'n Save)

Major Closures: In June 2025, Kroger announced the closure of five Pick 'n Save locations in the Milwaukee, WI, area as part of a nationwide plan to close 60 stores for efficiency.
